Makana Aloha Cloth
by Maile Mauch

*Makana Aloha = gift of love or friendship
This Makana Aloha -- Holiday Cloth 2000 -- is the cloth pattern I have been making for the Women's Shelter Gift packages this Christmas. The pattern used creates a vertical openwork texture, which would be good for any season-or reason- type cloth. My first sample of this cloth was in a "baby ombre" for a book submit. When I made it out of Peaches n Cream yarn, it reminded me of maile leis hanging down at a lei stand. Maile is the fragrant vine that you see grooms wear at Hawai'ian weddings.

Supplies:
Yarn: Peaches & Creme™Knitting worsted in ombres or solids
Needle size: 7 ( US )  single point needles and double point

Pattern: multiple of 3 stitches

Abbreviation: Wrn = Wrap yarn around the needle to make 1 stitch

Cast on:
Backscrubber: 17 stitches
Small Cloth: 23 or29 stitches
Large Cloth: 35 or 41 stitches
Row 1: B4, * Wrn to m1, sl 1 purlwise, k2, pass sl st over the k2, repeat from *,B4.
Row 2: B4, purl, B4.

Knit border for 1" then begin pattern. Moss Stitch is recommended for border.
Repeat pattern until a border width away, knit Moss Stitch border, and cast off.

Back Scrubber:
Knit pattern till 14-19" in length, knit border. Bind off all but 3 stitches, slide stitches onto double point needles. Knit I-cord for 9" bind off and sew to other side for handle. Knit I-cord for 9" bind off and sew for handle on cast on edge.

This cloth has a tendency to slant, some like it as knitted, others prefer to block it. For the back scrubber it is advisable to block.
